City Wickets: Plans for urban cricket arena in London announced

A London schoolgirl demonstrates her prowess with a bat and ball at a recent event to announce plans for an urban cricket arena.

Urban cricket is a simplified version of the traditional game that aimsto encourage young people to take part. Young cricketers from StSaviours School in Herne Hill took part in the event, which was attendedby England bowler Monty Panesar and former England captain MikeGatting.

Lib Peck, cabinet member for environment and culture at Lambeth Council'said: "We believe sport must be accessible to all, regardless ofbackground. The plans for an urban cricket arena will help young peoplein Lambeth who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to get intothe game and, who knows, maybe become an Ashes winning England captain."Panesar said: "It's investment like this that makes England's recentsuccesses possible - long may it continue."
