London will reclaim the streets for one day in the name of play

1 min read Early Years
London Play is to close 100 streets across the capital for a day to give children space to play.

The organisation has received £250,000 from the Big Lottery Fund and is teaming up with Lambeth Play Association, the Play Association Tower Hamlets and West Play in Hounslow to shut the roads.

The aim is to close 30 streets in each of the three boroughs for one-day events between now and May 2009, with a further 10 in other parts of London.

Paul Hocker, street play co-ordinator at London Play, said residents would be involved in the closures and it would be up to them how they used the space.

"We're not imposing rigid templates on how they should do it," he said. "However, play should be at the front of the agenda. The idea is that streets should be a multi-functional space but they're not anymore - they're the domain of the car. We want to change that with the idea being we can reclaim the street for one day for play."
