ChildRIGHT: Ask the Experts

1 min read

Q: Must a child have someone with them when they are interviewed by the police?

A: A child who is under 17 years old must have an appropriate adult with them when they are interviewed by the police. An interview can only take place without an appropriate adult if a delay would result in an immediate risk of harm to someone or serious loss or damage of property. An appropriate adult is often the child's parent or guardian, but can also be another responsible adult whom the child knows and trusts, such as their social worker. The main role of the appropriate adult is to ensure that the child is not mistreated by the police.
