Childright: Ask the Experts

1 min read
Q: Is there a maternity leave entitlement for a child who becomes pregnant while still attending school?

A: There is no set amount of maternity leave that a young person is entitled to when they become pregnant while still at school, and a young person is able to continue in education as long as they wish while pregnant. However, a pregnant pupil is able to take a maximum of 18 weeks' leave from school in the period immediately before and after the birth. There is no entitlement to paternity leave for a young person still attending school and this is something that should be discussed with the school to reach an agreement.

Q: Does a parent have a right to choose which school their child will attend?
