What will it mean for me if I apply for a Special Guardianship Order for my grandchild?
A Special Guardianship Order is an order that provides permanence and security for children for whom adoption would not be suitable but who cannot live with their parents. If you are granted a Special Guardianship Order by the court, you will obtain parental responsibility for your grandchild so that you can make decisions for him or her, including being able to make medical or education decisions for them. The local authority will also prepare a report about what support you would need. The local authority has a duty to make arrangements for the provision of a package of special guardianship support to you, which can include counselling, advice, information and financial support.
