Children's workforce strategy: Two new breeds of professional considered in worker shake-up

The Government is considering two new breeds of early years professional to drive forward its plans for improving childcare.

The long-awaited children's workforce strategy, published last Friday, says that the childcare sector could follow the Danish model where trained "social pedagogues" are the main workers across a range of settings except for schools.

It also highlights the "new" teacher model that has emerged in New Zealand and Spain. In this model, qualified teachers work across education and care settings, from nurseries to sixth forms. The strategy says: "To realise our vision of a strengthened role for the early years' professional ... we need to decide on the most appropriate model(s) for the sector."

Paul Ennals, chief executive of the National Children's Bureau and interim chair of the Children's Workforce Development Council, said it was significant that government now recognised the pedagogue model.
