The Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) is calling for Government funding to look at around 2,500 children at championship and club levels and find out how much physical and mental abuse they suffer.
The plan was announced at a conference last week of the CPSU, founded in 2001 by NSPCC and Sport England, coinciding with the International Children's Games in Coventry.
"We want to look at the type and prevalence of abuse," said director Steve Boocock. "We want to challenge the no pain, no gain attitude."
He said the survey would help the unit build up "policies, procedures and practices" to minimise abuse and help children meet the Every Child Matters outcomes.
