Children's Plan policies must avoid suffocating the young

The Every Child Matters agenda has been too over-protective of children, and the government's forthcoming Children's Plan needs to be less risk averse, the former head of the Children's Play Council said this week.

Tim Gill told CYP Now that the Children's Plan provided a chance for the government to shift away from increasingly risk-averse policies that are stifling children and young people. "I hope the plan will recognise that keeping children safe is also about helping them to be resilient," he said.

"That means allowing them to learn from the real world outside of home and school, and accepting they will make mistakes from time to time."

This week, Gill published a report, No Fear: Growing up in a risk averse society, arguing that childhood is being undermined by over-protection and intrusion in every aspect of children's lives.
