CHILDREN'S FUND: Partnerships still warning of deficit

Local Children's Fund partnerships could still face shortfalls in their funding for next year despite the Government almost restoring overall allocations.

Playtime in Northamptonshire has been told that it will receive around 90,000 for 2004/05, but its original approved budget was 101,000.

Although the project will not lose any staff, there is no money for core costs such as supervision and training.

Susan Mallock, vice-chair of Playtime's board of trustees, said: "They have been quite clever because we can't say there's been a reduction in service."

Children's minister Margaret Hodge said the contingency fund would be available to Wave 3 programmes primarily because of the way they profiled expenditure, with less spent in 2003/04, more in 2004/05 and amounts declining gradually in 2005/06.
