Children's Fund: Fear over expected cuts throws fund partnerships into crisis

Children's Fund programmes are likely to be hit by more cuts when the Government announces allocations for 2005/6 at the end of August, Children Now has learned.

The news follows the furore in February when the Government announced cuts of 15 per cent in 2004/5 and 30 per cent in 2005/6 (News, 4-10 February). Two weeks later an extra 20m for 2004/5 was found, reducing the cut to five per cent (News, 18-24 February). It was understood that ministers would use the recent spending review to address future cuts.

However, following conversations with officials from the Department for Education and Skills' regional offices, one member of a Children's Fund partnership said: "I'm expecting to have to make cuts of 20 to 30 per cent in the next financial year."
