Children in Need gives out 18m funding

BBC Children in Need is to award almost 18m to UK projects for disadvantaged children and young people, bringing the charity's donations this year to a record total of 37m.

One of the 1,343 projects to benefit from funding is the Royal School for the Deaf & Communication Disorders, which has received £76,515 to provide music lessons for pupils.

Beverley Thomas, fundraiser at the school, said: "We're very excited. We have used musicians with the young people in the past and it was very well received, but until now we have not had the cash to keep the initiative going."

Almost £20m has already been awarded to more than 800 projects this year.
