BBC Children in Need: main grants scheme

BBC Children in Need raises money to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. It currently supports more than 2,600 projects. The main grants programme is open to charities and not-for-profit organisations.

How much is available? The programme provides grants of £10,000 or more per year for up to three years. There is no upper limit for main grants but very few grants of more than £100,000 are made. Requests for larger amounts are always more competitive.

What will it fund? Organisations applying for grants must reflect five core principles: being focused on outcomes for children and young people; addressing disadvantage; safeguarding children; enabling participation by children and young people; avoiding statutory overlap or substitution.

Applicants must provide clear evidence that disadvantaged children and young people will be the primary beneficiaries of the project and will experience positive changes in their lives from the activities or services provided. Disadvantage could be from illness, distress, abuse or neglect, any kind of disability, behavioural or psychological difficulties, or living in poverty.

Grants only fund direct project costs, including salaries, volunteer expenses, building hire costs and travel costs. The grants will not fund any overheads or management costs.

When is the deadline? The grant programme is open all year round. Main grants are awarded three times a year.
