Children in Need gets more hands-on over funding

BBC Children in Need is to overhaul its funding approach and start targeting areas of work that are currently neglected.

The charity, which han-ded out £37m of grants this year, will also start offering non-financial support to the voluntary and community groups it funds.

In an exclusive interview with CYP Now, Sheila Jane Malley, Children in Need's director of grants and policy, said: "We want to use our knowledge to analyse gaps and proactively target organisations to apply for funding."

The move marks a break with Children in Need's traditional approach of waiting for organisations to apply for money. Malley said the charity hopes to use the information gathered from grant applications and its local grant assessors to identify problems and organisations it should provide targeted funding to.
