Children and young people's plans: Plan pioneers

While many councils are just about to embark on developing their children and young people's plans, Knowsley is ahead of the game and is already reviewing the plan it unveiled last September. Sue Learner investigates.

It was a four-year journey for Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Councilbut, after numerous meetings and countless cups of coffee, staffunveiled the local authority's children and young people's plan lastSeptember - 18 months ahead of the Government's deadline. And now, whilemost local authorities are busily pulling together the informationneeded to produce their first plan, Knowsley is moving further ahead byembarking on a review.

Under the Children Act 2004, every local authority in England and Waleswill have to draw up a children and young people's plan by April nextyear. This single, overarching plan will set out the council'spriorities for all services affecting children and young people.
