Delegates at a National Day Nurseries Association conference said they were concerned about the number of young people who were coming into the sector after taking the NVQ Level Two which only takes a maximum of 12 months. They also expressed concern that this trend could be exacerbated by proposals to expand vocational training in last week's Tomlinson report on 14-19 reform.
One delegate said: "It's government-funded bums on seats - it's not a skilled workforce."
The conference, The Early Years Workforce - Join the National Debate, also heard Norman Glass, one of the architects of Sure Start, call for a cross-party commitment to childcare.
