Workforce Development: Childcare strategy under threat from lack oflong-term funding

Ministers have been warned that a lack of long-term funding to improve the early years workforce is threatening to derail the 10-year childcare strategy.

The first major analysis of the strategy says there are "earlyindications" that progress is stalling due to fears that funding willdry up after 2008.

The strategy was launched nearly two years ago with an emphasis on ahigh-quality workforce as the key to improving the quality of childcare(Children Now, 7-14 December 2004).

The Daycare Trust's analysis, launched at its annual con-ference lastweek, highlights concerns around the 250m Transformation Fund toimprove the quality of the early years workforce. The fund is currentlyavailable from 2006 to 2008, effectively on a trial basis. The reportsays "the fund is underspent and work is under way to discover thereasons for this".
