Childcare: Southwark consults young service users

Children and young people may meet childcare providers to explain what they want from breakfast clubs, after-school clubs and holiday play schemes, as part of a radical rethink of Southwark's out-of-school childcare provision.

This is just one of the ideas being developed following the launch of the south London council's first Out of School Childcare Strategy.

A questionnaire for young service users is also being planned and the council hopes to consult with them on a regular basis.

And research has been commissioned into the needs of 11- to 14-year-olds following feedback from young people and their parents.

Sustainability is an integral part of the strategy, which aims to create 735 new out-of-school childcare places within the next two years. Strategy co-author Marcia Buxton, senior development officer in Southwark's early years service, said: "We don't want to see this fall flat on its face after two years."
