1 min read
Support groups for grandparents caring for young children are just as vital as mother and toddler groups, according to new research.

Dr Anne Gray, who carried out a detailed evaluation of nine grandparentand toddler groups, found they offered a wide range of benefits forchildren and carers and concluded there should be many more. She saidthe groups allowed grandparents to meet childcarers of a similar age, asthey could feel excluded by "cliquey" young mums.

They were also a chance to learn about new thinking as well as thelatest nursery rhymes and songs. Gray, of the Families and SocialCapital ESRC research group based at London South Bank University, argued there was a need to sustain and support grandparents' childcarerole as so many families rely on them.
