Childcare: Northern Ireland - Ministers to spend 1.2bn onschools

The Northern Ireland Executive has unveiled its spending plans for the year, which include nearly 1.2bn for the Department of Education, and 1.9bn for health and social services.

Finance minister Peter Robinson launched the plans, set out in theBudget Bill (Northern Ireland) 2007, in the Northern Ireland Assemblylast week.

The Department of Education will get 1.17m for educationservices, including pre-schools, and 21m for youth and communityservices.

Robinson regretted the executive had to stick to spending plans madebefore the return to devolution in the province: "While it is not idealto be carrying forward plans set by the previous administration, it isthe most pragmatic way of ensuring the continued and uninterruptedprovision of public services."
