In a speech last week, Hain vowed to fully implement Sir George Bain'sreview of education, describing it as a "roadmap to excellence foreducation in Northern Ireland" (Children Now, 6 December 2006-9 January2007).
He also backed the rollout of extended schools in Northern Irelandnoting that the Comprehensive Spending Review offered an opportunity to"drive up education spending" and to introduce extended schoolsthroughout the province. At the moment, four out of every 10 schoolsprovide extended services.
Seamus Searson, Northern Ireland organiser for teachers' union NASUWT'said: "Northern Ireland is behind in extended schools and there are alot of deprived areas here where they would fit in well, providing itisn't a burden on the teachers."
