Childcare: Holiday costs are down in the capital

The cost of holiday childcare in central London has dropped significantly because more local authorities are subsidising places, new statistics show.

But the Daycare Trust, which surveyed children's information services inEngland last month, said average costs nationwide remain worryinglyhigh.

Holiday childcare costs in inner London have dropped to an average of48.90 per week, down from 70.83 in 2004. That's nearlyhalf of the cost in outer London, the most expensive region at 90.28 per week, and cheaper than areas like the north west ofEngland.

The trust said the figures showed the impact of some boroughssubsidising places. For example, in Kensington and Chelsea, holidayschemes cost 7.50 a day.

In Camden, parents pay 10 per day for a holiday play project fromnine to six.
