Childcare costs soar above inflation rate

The cost of childcare in England has rocketed to the point where parents are spending up to 35 per cent of their weekly income on nursery or childminding fees.

Figures released by the Daycare Trust show the average cost of a week's childcare for a child under two is £159. This compares with average weekly earnings of £457. The cost of childcare has risen by five per cent in the last year - more than twice the rate of inflation.

In Scotland parents pay an average of £141 a week for childcare for under-twos, while in Wales the cost is £142. The most expensive area in England for childcare is outer London, where parents are paying an average of £202 a week. The cheapest childcare can be found in the West Midlands, where families pay £133 a week.
