Nearly two thirds of local authorities in England are failing to meet their legal duty to provide sufficient childcare over holiday periods, the Daycare Trust has revealed.

In its annual holiday childcare survey, the charity found that the average cost of one week of holiday childcare in Britain is around £100. The most expensive provider charged £400 for a week.

The charity surveyed every local authority in England, Wales and Scotland and received 134 responses.

More than a half of respondents in England had their budgets for holiday childcare cut in the past year.

Anand Shukla, chief executive of the Daycare Trust said: “Council cuts to holiday childcare budgets and family information services are hitting families across Britain hard, with only one in three local authorities now providing the childcare working families need this summer, despite their legal duty to cater for the needs of all.
