Childcare: Guide to counting local places tested

A group of local authorities are to test a new rule of thumb guide to help them work out how many childcare places they need.

The Department for Education and Skills is developing the resource aspart of the Childcare Implementation Project. The project, led byconsultants Carey Oppenheim and Robert Hill, involves 12 councilstesting different ways of implementing the Government's childcarevision.

One of the tools they will try out is the "ready reckoner", based onnational statistics and showing how much full daycare parents ondifferent incomes want. Oppenheim told a 4Children conference last weekit was a "crude tool" and still in its early stages. But she said itcould help councils get a rough idea of what was needed in their areasto help them meet a new duty to ensure there is enough childcare.
