Childcare: Extended schools must be joined up

Extended schools must be a "joined-up service" that links in with existing childcare, or local authorities will risk destroying the balance of provision, childcare experts have warned.

The call comes amid fears there is still too much emphasis on developingextended school services on school sites."Local authorities need torealise that an extended schools service doesn't necessarily need to bein a school," said James Hemp-sall, of Hempsall Consultancies, whichadvises councils on the 10-year childcare strategy.

"I am urging local authorities to ensure there is a balance withvoluntary, independent providers linking in with schools.

Extended schools must have joined-up services."

John Alwyine-Mosely, 4Children's head of operations and practicedevelopment, said authorities needed to look at childcare services inrelation to schools when auditing provision to help them planstrategically.

And Patricia Jackson, the National Day Nurseries Association's head ofregional development, said it was "helpful" that national guidancereferred to extended school services rather than extended schools.
