At nearly 150 pages, Surrey County Council's audit of early educationand childcare is verging on telephone directory thickness. It isdifficult to equate this document, with its bewildering array of tablesand graphs, with the lively world of childcare, yet this collection ofstatistics will have a significant impact on services available to localchildren and parents.
Surrey carried out its first audit in 2000 but the process has evolvedgreatly since then, reveals Di Roberts, head of performance managementand information services for early years and childcare.
For example, the authority has moved towards providing information onchildcare places at ward level. And, while a full audit update iscarried out once a year, there are quarterly updates on the service'ssection of the council's web site.
