At least 30,000 new childcare places are needed in the Thames Gatewayarea in the next decade, says the study. And 5,000 new childcare staffand 1,000 teaching staff will be needed by 2016.
The report was commissioned by the Thames Gateway London Partnership andsays a failure to address the shortages will mean more child poverty andsevere recruitment problems.
There is already a shortage of childcare in the local authority areas inthe Thames Gateway. A planned increase in jobs and housing in the areawill mean demand escalates. And the population is expected to rise by 16per cent because of developments, including facilities for theOlympics.
Teresa Edmans, the partnership's health and regeneration programmemanager, said childcare was vital to ensure local people benefited fromnew jobs.
