Childcare: Doubts over the creation of new places in London

1 min read
A bitter row has broken out over London mayor Ken Livingstone's plan to create hundreds of new childcare places in the capital.

The Liberal Democrats attacked the mayor's record so far as "pretty dire" after figures cast doubt on his ability to create 800 extra childcare places by the end of March as promised.

The row broke out after a report by the Greater London Authority's budget committee revealed that the mayor's London Development Agency had created only 95 new childcare places by last October - just 12 per cent of the annual target figure.

Dee Doocey, Liberal Democrat member of the London Assembly, said it was deeply worrying that the mayor had so far failed to deliver childcare places in London.

But Livingstone said he was confident that a minimum of 800 new childcare places would be created by the end of March.
