Childcare: Research fuels fears over sustainability

A fifth of full day care providers are operating at a loss and many more are barely breaking even, says new Government research.

The findings have prompted nursery leaders to call for Governmentaction.

The research, published last week, revealed there had been an increasein the number of all types of childcare providers making a loss since2003.

But the trend was particularly marked among full day care providers.

A fifth said they had made a loss in their most recent financialyear.

This is up from 12 per cent in 2003.

Only a quarter were sure they had made a profit, 31 per cent had managedto cover costs and 21 per cent did not know. A quarter of out-of-schoolclubs and 15 per cent of sessional care providers were also operating ata loss.
