
A study of 25 members of the County Councils Network (CCN) found that 80 per cent of respondents said one in 10 childcare providers in their area were at risk of closure over the winter, with the remaining 20 per cent predicting that one in four were at risk.
According to the study of some of the largest councils in England, providers in more remote and rural areas are most financially vulnerable from a second wave of the virus hitting their income.
Childminders are also more at risk of closing, according to councils, followed by day nurseries, and sessional preschools which offer limited hours and often located in remoter areas.
