A4e (Action for Employment) has been running the Business Success for Childcare programme since last summer. More than 20,000 childcare providers have booked places on the courses, which it runs on behalf of the Sure Start Unit.
Poor business planning by childcare providers was cited earlier this month by the National Audit Office in a report that claimed current provision was "unsustainable" (News, 3-9 March 2004).
An A4e spokesman said the company had "all the machinery in place" to extend the training programme.
A4e has more than 50 trainers running workshops that cover issues such as marketing and managing finances.
