Childcare - Better-off families still benefit more

Government policies have improved access to childcare but well-off families are still benefiting the most, says new research.

NatCen gathered the views of parents in England and Wales for twoseparate reports published last week. The research found that morelow-income families in England were using childcare, but there werebigger increases among the better off. In Wales some families stillcannot afford childcare.

The research also found that informal care by family and friends wasimportant for families in England and Wales, but government had donelittle to support it. It also highlighted a lack of information onavailablility and costs.

Children's minister Beverley Hughes told a Local Government Chronicleconference last week that children's information services must beimproved.

And Welsh education minister Jane Davidson said the Welsh AssemblyGovernment's new childcare strategy should help low-income families.
