Childcare: Minority families need information

More effort must be made to get information on childcare out to Black and ethnic minority families, says new research.

Linked reports by the Daycare Trust and NatCen show more families fromall ethnic backgrounds are using childcare. But Black families are morelikely to use formal childcare while more White families use informalcare. Asian families are least likely to use any form of childcare.

The research found many were unsure about childcare benefits and thetypes of care eligible. Anne Kasimiriski, director in NatCen's familiesand children group, said: "One of our main recommendations is aroundincreasing awareness of help towards the cost of childcare."

The trust's head of services Thom Crabbe agreed better information wascrucial. "That includes availability in a range of languages andplaces," he said.
