Child poverty target is achievable with right investment, say MPs

The government could still achieve its goal of halving child poverty by 2010 if it acts quickly, MPs said this week.

A report by MPs on Parliament's Work and Pensions Select Committee warned the government is on course to miss its target by nearly a million children. But the committee said by allocating more money to the problem in next week's Budget, ministers could still achieve their goal.

Kate Bell, head of policy and research at One Parent Families-Gingerbread, said: "The 1.5 million poor children in one parent families are relying on the Chancellor to use the Budget to make sure the government keeps its promise to halve child poverty by 2010. If it is to meet its ambitious target further action is needed."
