Poverty campaigners urge MPs to put pressure on government

1 min read Social Care
The Child Poverty Action Group has urged MPs to put pressure on the government to meet its 2010 target, as the Child Poverty Bill has its second reading today.

The bill will enshrine in legislation the government's pledge to end child poverty in Britain by 2020. But the next pre-Budget report represents the last opportunity for the government to make good on its promise to meet the halfway target by next year.

In a briefing issued to MPs, CPAG said that today's second reading debate should be used "to highlight to the government the importance of taking action in the PBR alongside the Bill to ensure that children are helped now".

CPAG's chief executive, Kate Green, said: "For the bill to have real credibility we need investment in British families in the pre-Budget report to give them the help they need in the recession and so we don't fall further behind the child poverty targets."
