Work and pensions secretary John Hutton announced plans to require loneparents on benefits to look for work after their children turn 11 or 12rather than the current age of 16. The move, said Hutton, wouldencourage parents to find work.
In an article for The House Magazine, Hutton said Britain asks "verylittle of lone parents on benefits" and that it was right that aschildcare services became more widely available the Government rethinksits approach.
Then Stephen Timms, the chief secretary to the Treasury, told MPs on theTreasury Select Committee that the responsibility for reducing childpoverty could be changed from a joint Treasury and Department for Workand Pensions (DWP) responsibility to one solely for the DWP.
