Child poverty: Our plans for poverty

Just before the latest child poverty figures were released, young people met ministers and MPs to tell them what needs to change. Sarah Cooper reports.

- 10.30am - Welcome: For the past half hour, the hall at Save theChildren's headquarters has been filling up with young people from avariety of backgrounds, including state schools, public schools andyouth groups. Their ages vary from children to those in their lateteens.

The chatter dies down as Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive of Save theChildren, opens the day's activities by talking about how important anissue child poverty is.

"There are growing coalitions of young people who want to see theGovernment put child poverty at the top of the debate," she says.

- 10.35am - What is poverty in the UK?: Freddie and Mohammed, two youngpeople, take to the microphones for a presentation. They get everyone totake part in a quiz, asking people to stand up to indicate their answer."How many children live in poverty in the UK?" they ask. The answer is astaggering 3.4 million. They continue: "How many children live in badhousing?" The answer is one million.
