Analysis: Child Poverty - Campaign is in danger of stalling

The Government is on track to reduce child poverty by 2005. But as Jo Stephenson discovers, it could be putting its long-term ambitions at risk by dismissing recommendations put forward by frontline organisations and a select committee.

It's more than five years since Tony Blair pledged to bring an end to child poverty by 2020, and the Government is on track to meet its goal of reducing child poverty by a quarter by 2004/05.

But many predict that it will be an uphill struggle to mine out deeply entrenched seams of deprivation around the country and reach the next key milestone of halving child poverty by 2010.

A report by the Work and Pensions Select Committee, released in April (Children Now, 14-20 April), praised Government policy that was centred around boosting employment and supporting families through the new tax credit system.
