Child poverty: 14k to put a child through school

It costs parents nearly 14,000 to send a single child through the UK state school system, according to statistics obtained by the End Child Poverty Network Cymru.

Parents on low incomes can struggle to meet the "hidden costs" of stateeducation such as uniforms and schools trips.

These costs have the potential to "isolate, exclude and stigmatise"children whose parents are unable to afford them, said Sean O'Neill,co-ordinator of the network.

Jayne Isaac, policy officer at children's charity NCH Cymru, called forschools to be provi-ded with "activity and excursion funds" to ensuretrips were open to all children, grants for uniforms and universal freeschool meals.
