A recent survey by the charities Save the Children and Family Action has highlighted the high cost to families of sending their children to school. The poll of more than 1,000 parents found 51 per cent of families on an income below £30,000 struggled to pay for basics such as uniform, activities and school trips. Half of those on incomes of less than £12,000 said they even struggled to buy new school shoes for their children.
With the new school year about to start, these findings offer a good opportunity for youth workers to ask whether the cost of state education has become too high.
