It can be a challenge for youth workers to provide fun activities on a budget during the summer holidays. Asking young people what they want is often the best place to start.

Within days the school summer holidays will begin, offering young people a welcome six-week break from education. But provision of youth activities and services is patchy during the summer months, and it presents a challenging time for youth workers.

Joy Namayanja, extended services adviser at YMCA, says it is crucial to consult young people when organising summer activities. She advises talking to them about what makes the perfect summer holiday and the types of activities they would like to take part in.

How much would young people be able to contribute for a trip away? What is there locally for them to do? What trips away are feasible? The answers given can be surprisingly unambitious. Having fun with friends is often cited as the main prerequisite for an activity.
