Care-leavers: Care system must improve education

The Department for Education and Skills statistics, released for the year ending 31 March 2006, also show the number of 12- to 14-year-old girls in care becoming mothers has doubled from 10 to 20 in the past year.

Ross Hendry, head of public policy at children's charity NCH, said the statistics highlight the need for good practice outlined in the Care Matters green paper to be implemented quickly. "The Government should be doing more to ensure long-term funding for projects," he said.
