Campaign for more young leaders

1 min read Youth Work
Youth charity Changemakers is to launch a campaign that will lobby for better leadership opportunities for young people.

The charity hopes to change opinions of employers in the private, publicand voluntary sectors, including company directors and magistrates, andsee more young people placed in decision-making positions.

Freedom of Information Act requests by the charity in September foundthat just 2.2 per cent of local councillors and MPs in England are aged18 to 30. Only 2.1 per cent of charity trustees fall in this age groupand none sit on boards of government departments, NHS trusts, regulatorybodies, or work as magistrates.

The organisation is preparing a study to underpin its campaign, whichwill survey young people's experiences of recruitment across differentsectors.

"Is it young people who are disqualifying themselves because they don'tbelieve they can be successful, or are young people kept out ofleadership positions because gatekeepers don't believe in them?" saidChangemaker's chief executive Adam Nichols.
