The charity Changemakers is offering young people an opportunity to shape the way organisations are run. Tom de Castella looks at the benefits for those involved so far.

There aren't many young people who can say they have helped to shape the way an organisation runs. But thanks to a leadership programme run by youth empowerment charity Changemakers, 15 young people have been given the chance to work day to day within different organisations to help influence the work they produce and the way they operate.

The Future Leaders programme was launched by Changemakers in 2000 but it was only in 2005 that the Young Advocate scheme began. The premise is that a young person will spend 10 days working with an organisation, helping to make it more youth-friendly, while gaining leadership experience.
