Business skills to lift extended offer

Education
School business managers in Lewisham, south London, are taking part in training on using the principles of social enterprises to generate resources for their school.

The pilot is due to start in January 2009 and has been designed to help schools develop sustainable extended services. Each trainee will be provided with a mentor for a 12-month period. The mentors will teach school business managers to view the school and staff as assets that can generate funds.

A spokesman for the London Borough of Lewisham said: "Money is not flooding into extended services in the current financial climate. But our school business managers will be able to take an informed view and adjust like any other business."
