A survey of more than 1,000 school leaders, conducted by the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) also showed that one in 10 headteachers had more than half their time freed up by employing a school business manager.
School business managers are employed to oversee non-teaching duties, such as human resources, facilities, budgets and health and safety.
Toby Salt, deputy chief executive of NCSL, said: "School business managers are playing a vital role in the way 21st-century schools are being run. They allow headteachers to focus more on their core duties - leading teaching and learning, raising standards and improving children's achievement and wellbeing."
The survey also suggested that schools benefited financially from business managers, not only in terms of savings, but also raising an average of £8,000 a year through sourcing new forms of income.
