Delivering a busy schedule of extended services for pupils and their families is no mean feat for schools. Joe Lepper meets the new breed of business managers who are helping to free up head teachers' time and raise money.

Chipping Sodbury School's business manager Richard Blacker is in a confident mood. The South Gloucestershire secondary school has just secured more than £2m funding for a new sports hall and negotiations are going well with the Football Association (FA) for a further £1m.

"The role of business manager has been crucial for this project," says Blacker, who left a 20-year career in banking three years ago to become the school's business manager. "Schools need this role - someone who knows the funding process inside out and is able to negotiate with organisations like the FA," he adds.
