Extended services on school buses

Education Youth Work
Children with special educational needs (SEN) are to get access to extended services on school buses as part of an innovative pilot project.

The project is running in the London Borough of Lewisham and will start in January. It will provide extended services for children who are usually unable to access out-of-hours provision. A specialist arts worker will work across five school buses, providing engaging activities for the young passengers on one of the buses every day.

The children and young people who use the bus service have already been consulted to help develop the service. The borough's extended services department is currently finalising plans for the programme.

A spokeswoman for the borough said: "It's always difficult to solve the problem of providing after-school activities for children who use our door-to-door bus service. We thought maybe we could do something on the bus that enriches their day."
