Policy into practice Bullying on buses

THE ISSUE Tackling bullying remains a key priority in surveys of what young people want. While dealing with bullying within the school grounds has become higher profile, less has been done to tackle other arenas where children may be at risk.

With several million young people using the bus every day, many pupils may feel anxious about intimidation and abuse happening beyond the supervision of parents and teachers. We must look at ways to improve safety on school buses through working to help ensure the peace of mind of young bus users in their everyday lives.

CASE STUDY 1

Metro, the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, has implemented My Bus - a new home-to-school transport vehicle, currently used by more than 9,000 of the county's primary and secondary school pupils. Using 150 yellow buses, the My Bus scheme transports pupils as young as five safely to and from school.
