Bury braced for cuts to services

Youth Work
Youth services in Bury in Lancashire are under threat of closure after Bury Council announced that it is considering outsourcing youth provision to save money.

A well-placed source confirmed the plans and told CYP Now that thecouncil will tender out the youth services and will expect localvoluntary organisations to bid for them. The source expressed concernthat: "Bury is a small authority and it does not have a very vibrantvoluntary sector."

"Obviously the worst case scenario is that jobs will be lost and centreswill close," the source added.

Bury Youth Service runs five youth centres in the area, with a totalstaff of 48. Young people from Bury have started a campaign in protestagainst the plans, unofficially titled Save Our Service (SOS).

A spokeswoman at Bury Council claimed that nothing will be finaliseduntil later this year.
